On September 12, the “National Day of Women with Disabilities” is celebrated, with the aim of making visible the needs, demands and proposals of a vulnerable group that faces double discrimination: gender and disability.
This day pays tribute to Gabriela Raquel Brimmer Dlugaz, a brave activist for the rights of people with disabilities, who founded the Association for the Rights of Motor People, the Gaby Brimmer National Physical or Mental Rehabilitation Award and the Gaby Brimmer Scholarship.
According to data from the Movement of Mexican Women with Disabilities, at least 11 million women with disabilities reside in the country, the most discriminated against group. They are 10 times more likely to suffer sexual assault than other women and 8 out of 10 may be victims of violence.
In terms of economic activity, only 27% of women with disabilities are economically active, compared to 52.9% of men with disabilities. On digital platforms, they represent only 2.1% of content.
So on September 12, 'National Day of Women with Disabilities', we invite you to join us in reflection, empathy and action. It is a day to recognize the struggles and triumphs of these brave women, as well as to raise awareness about the importance of inclusion and equality. Together, we can work to remove barriers, promote equity, and ensure all voices are heard. Let's celebrate and honor women with disabilities, today and every day!”
